Inner Chapter 05 · correcting how we judge people

What does The Seal of Virtue Complete actually correct?

The Seal of Virtue Complete corrects a basic human mistake: we keep treating appearance, résumé, rank, and social standards as if they exhausted a person's worth. Zhuangzi uses figures whom ordinary society undervalues to show that stable virtue does not depend on polished form or public prestige. The more we judge by surface scorecards, the more likely we are to miss the person worth learning from.

Which three corrections matter first?

The point is not to memorize the cast, but to see how Zhuangzi overturns familiar scorecards.

Why does it follow The Human World?

The Human World shows how social pressure damages people; this chapter asks which standards make that damage seem normal.

From social pressure to judgment error

The previous chapter shows how organizations and utility can consume a person. This one shows that much of that consumption already rests on bad standards of worth.

Not anti-social, but anti-misjudgment

Zhuangzi does not say that external conditions never matter. He says they must never be treated as the final measure of a human being.

It prepares the move into deeper transformation

Once value is no longer locked to visible form, the next question naturally becomes life, death, apprenticeship, and sitting in forgetfulness in The Great and Most Honoured Master.

Frequently asked questions

These answers clarify the page topic, common mistakes, and where to read next.

Does The Seal of Virtue Complete mean outer form does not matter at all?

No. It means outer form, bodily condition, and public rank cannot be the final measure of a person's worth.

Is 'virtue' here just moral preaching?

Not mainly. It is closer to an inwardly full, settled, and affecting condition of life than to an externally imposed moral label.
