What can the Butterfly Dream do when identity becomes too hard?
The modern force of the Butterfly Dream is not that it tells us to doubt everything. Its force is that title, résumé, group identity, performance, and self-narration often harden into a total answer to 'who I am.' Zhuangzi does not ask us to erase identity. He asks us to loosen the grip of fixed identity so one changing evaluation does not become the collapse of the whole self.
Why does identity tighten so easily now?
Many people are not missing an identity. They are overwritten by one.
